Best Used Cars for College Students

Depending on where you go to college, a car may be essential. Students at commuter schools, schools with insufficient public transportation, or faraway off campus housing find life is much easier when they have their own car and don’t need to rely on friends for rides. Some cars are ideal for college students because of their low cost of ownership, modern features, good crash ratings, and versatile cargo areas. Buying used allows for greater cost savings – and many older models of cars have fared particularly well:College Cars in Dallas

  • Mazda 3 (2004-2009) – The Mazda 3 was a top rated compact car with sharp driving dynamics, high cabin quality, and attractive body. It is also rated well in reliability. These 2004-2009 models run from $4,000 to $10,000 and are a great bang for your buck.
  • Honda CR-V (2002-2006) – The Honda CR-V is reliable, efficient, and holds its value extremely well. One fun aspect of these models of CR-V’s is that the cargo floor turns into a picnic table, and the bin underneath is watertight and drainable – perfect for a cooler. This car was almost made for tailgates. It can range from $4,900-$13,000 depending on year and features.
  • Scion tC (2005-2010) – Many college students love the sporty, cute look of this coupe. But even with two doors, the Scion tC offers nice backseat legroom and spacious cargo area. Ranging from $5,000-$15,000, this is a great deal for someone who needs to get around town without too many passengers.
  • Acura TSX (2004-2008) – The Acura TSX offers luxury features at an affordable price. Heated leather seats, touchscreen controls, aux jacks come on this entry-level luxury sedan in addition to great crash ratings and mileage. Ranging from $6,500-$15,500, it is a nice option for someone who wants more than just the basics.
  • Toyota Prius (2006-2009) – With fantastic gas mileage at 46 mpg, the Prius is an eco-minded choice. They aren’t as small as they look, though, and should be able to move you into your dorm room. These models start around $7,000-$15,000.

These five cars aged well and are a great pick for college students looking to buy a reliable used car. Some honorable mentions with a slightly higher price tag include:

  • Ford Mustang (2005-2009)
  • Kia Soul (2010-2013)
  • Honda Fit (2009-2013)
  • Hyundai Tuscon (2010-2015)
  • Toyota FJ Cruiser (2007-2011)
  • Subaru Impreza (2012-2015)

No matter what model you choose, it’s important to pick a car that fits your lifestyle. Some college students opt for small SUVs to lug around skiing and snowboarding equipment and others know that they’ll need to fit their car into tight parking spaces. The added benefit of buying used is that there are tons of options for a lower price point. Having a car with you at school gives you a larger sense of freedom, allowing you to get that far away part time job or visit home on the weekends.

Important lessons for kids who are buying their first car

Everyone looks forward to their 16th birthday so they can take their license test and hit the open road. But with great freedom comes great responsibility – many of which kids don’t often consider when buying a car.

Buying Your First Car in DallasAccording to recent surveys, 41 percent of parents said they bought their child’s first car, with just 17 percent saying their child purchased their first car for themselves. While the number of kids footing the bill for the car may be down, there are still important lessons for kids buying their first car:

  • Establish a budget. Knowing how much you can afford monthly will determine what cars you can choose from. And don’t forget gas, insurance, maintenance, and taxes! Because cars depreciate quickly, the best way to save money on a first car is to buy used.
  • Create a list of vehicles that fit within your budget. Typically, small sedans and hatchbacks are the best bang for your buck with lower costs for maintenance, fuel, and insurance.
  • Test drive. Now comes the fun part! Particularly with used cars, it’s important to inspect and test drive. All cars have been treated differently, and it’s important to ensure the car is in the condition the seller is claiming. It’s useful to bring an experienced adult along to help you with this process. No matter what type of car you buy, it’s important to look for several features including antilock brakes, electronic stability control, and head-protecting side airbags.
  • Again, it’s a good idea to bring an adult to this stage. It’s important to get a good deal on your first car, but the seller still has to make a profit. Negotiating can be intimidating, but knowing how high you are willing to go and if you are willing to walk away makes it much easier.

If you’re not old enough yet to purchase your first car, it’s never too early to start thinking about it! Saving money years before you turn 16 will make the car buying process much easier and will give you more options when looking to buy.

How To Keep Your AC Running Efficiently

Keeping your cool in your car during the summer months is crucial, as we face record heat more and more often, and making sure your car’s AC is running efficiently is increasingly important. The danger of a hot car that’s been sitting in the sun for hours in the middle of July or August can be significant, especially for those who are most vulnerable, the very young or elderly, or even small pets.

The key to your car’s ability to stay cool in the summer is your AC. And making sure that your AC is well maintained and running at full efficiency is at the heart of your summer car cooling challenge.

Automobile Air Conditioning Repair in DallasThe number one component of keeping your AC running efficiently is regular car air conditioning service, to help ensure optimal passenger comfort and vehicle performance, especially on the hottest days of the year when you need it the most.

While most people believe that your air conditioner just pumps cold air into the car, in reality, your air conditioner also pulls hot air out of your car, in addition to blowing cold air into the vehicle interior.

Proper maintenance of your car air conditioning involves making sure that the entire system is working, which means that hot air is being removed efficiently from the interior of the car’s cabin and dispelling it into the atmosphere outside, in addition to pumping cool air back into the vehicle interior.

That’s why regular maintenance of your auto AC is so necessary because a variety of different components need to work together effectively for your car to function at full capacity in delivering total comfort to you.

During your AC maintenance check-ups, make sure that your compressor, condenser, and evaporator are functioning properly because these mechanical parts need to be properly maintained to prevent a breakdown.

At Dallas European Auto, our highly trained mechanics are known for being cool under pressure, and we can help you make sure that your car keeps you in the chill zone all summer long.  Living in the Dallas area means that having a properly functioning AC is an absolute necessity, which is why so many customers rely on us for regular maintenance and repair of their vehicle’s air conditioning.

In particular with your car air conditioner, the more quickly a problem issue is identified and repaired, the less costly the situation is likely to become. When you bring your car into Dallas European Auto for an air conditioner check-up, we’ll do an overall system diagnosis, replace any refrigerant as needed, evaluate and replace any blower motor components that are worn or in need of repair, and thoroughly examine and clean or repair or replace your condenser and evaporator.

Other than regular maintenance from the auto AC experts at Dallas European Auto, it’s also essential that if you have a vehicle that’s not used regularly, to run the system for a few minutes at least once a week which helps to ensure that the different hoses, valves, and pumps throughout your vehicle’s air conditioning system are kept well lubricated.

So make sure your AC is serviced on a regular basis, be certain to run the system at least once a week especially during the hottest days of summer, and you should be able to keep cool and comfortable all year round, no matter how hot it is outside.

The Most Reliable Car In Summer Heat

We often get asked, “What’s the most reliable car in the summer heat?” It’s a great question, especially given how hot it is in the summertime, and here at Dallas European Auto we know a lot about taking care of the finest automobiles in the world, and we’ve seen how different cars respond to the blazing mid-summer sun and heat.

First, you should know that all modern cars are fully capable of enduring summer heat, particularly if they are well maintained. During the design and manufacturing process, every vehicle is put under standardized quality evaluation and testing in extreme weather conditions just to make certain that it’s built to withstand both the hot and cold. If you have concerns about your current vehicle and its ability to withstand the warm weather, take the time now to schedule an appointment with us, and we can give your car a full summer weather check-up.

There are differences between cars though, and one simple difference can be seen in the color of your car’s paint and the color of the interior. Dark colors like black, absorb the sun’s energy, and can more readily transmit that heat into the interior of your vehicle.

If you have a car with black exterior paint and black interior, the physical properties of the sun’s energy are more likely to absorb heat into the interior of the car, whereas lighter colors, like white or silver or tan or grey, tend to reflect back the sun’s energy, which can make a difference in how hot your vehicle gets while it’s sitting in the sun.

Car Maintenance in DallasIf you are buying a car that’s been made in the last 8 years, you can feel confident that every car in the class that you’re choosing from, in terms of price range and size, will have equivalent capabilities in terms of air conditioning and gas mileage. If you’re buying a used vehicle, you can consult with Consumer Reports or Edmunds about questions of reliability, but in general manufacturing standards have become standardized and you really should rely more on a good mechanic to advise you as to whether or not the car you’re considering purchasing is a good bet in terms of weathering the summer heat.

Contact us to schedule an appointment if you have a vehicle that you’re considering purchasing if you would like us to evaluate it for you, and we can help you by checking it over to see how well the vehicle has been maintained, which is the key consideration in purchasing a used vehicle.

Another consideration for those of us who live in warmer climates is how quickly the air conditioning cools down your vehicle after you start it. This is something you should try out for yourself if you’re considering purchasing a vehicle. Start it up on a hot day after it’s been in the sun, and keep track of how long the air conditioning takes to cool down the vehicle, although in general, we’ve seen that increasingly modern auto air conditioning is working very well in terms of cooling down a vehicle quickly and effectively.

Many of the factors that are important when it comes to keeping your vehicle summer time ready have more to do with proper and regular maintenance of your vehicle.

In our experience, the cars that perform best in the hot sun of the dead of summer are those vehicles whose owners make a habit of regular maintenance. Issues like battery corrosion can raise the internal temperature of the battery and lead to battery failure. Always making sure that your fluid levels, in particular, the engine oil and coolant are at the proper level is important, in addition to transmission and power-steering fluids.  Proper tire inflation is another way to keep your vehicle functioning at the optimal temperature and performance level.

Of course, many people feel that the best kind of car for the summer heat is a convertible or a car with a sunroof. Summer is a great time to drive and to experience the open air and the road, and driving with the top down or the sunroof open (when it’s not too hot!) are great ways to savor summer driving at its best. And when you’re not driving, try to keep your car parked in the shade, which both keeps your car cool, but also preserves the color and appearance of your upholstery, paint, and trim.

So when the mercury in the thermometer is rising, and you feel like it’s time for your summer road trip, just make sure that you’ve taken care of all your routine maintenance, so that you and your car are ready for the sweltering summer heat.

That way you can enjoy the ride without worrying about skyrocketing temperatures. And if you have any concerns about your vehicle and whether or not its summer weather ready, just schedule a routine maintenance check-up with us, and we’ll get your car set for the scorching hot weather!

Do’s and Don’ts for Washing Your Car at Home

Your car is your pride and joy – you want to give it the TLC it needs to shine. A do-it-yourself wash is preferred by many owners, but what they don’t know is their wash routine could be doing more harm than good. For a bright shine that’s safe for your vehicle’s finish, stick to these steps.

Car Washing Do’s
It’s a smart idea to wash your ride weekly. Dirt, salts, tree sap and pollen, bird mess, and dead bugs can all build up on your vehicle, and if left for too long, they can lead to stains or cause damage to the finish.

Dallas European Auto car wash tipsOnly use wash products made for vehicles. Don’t you dare bring out the dish soap or other household cleaners – those are designed specifically for removing dirt and grime from household surfaces, not the delicate exterior of an automobile. Using them can strip your vehicle of its protective wax coating.

Always give your car a complete rinse before starting the wash to remove debris. If this debris isn’t taken off, it could scratch your vehicle as you scrub.

Use separate sets of sponges and buckets when you wash your vehicles. Your wheels accumulate more debris, and washing them with the same equipment as the rest of your car can transfer this refuse to your paint job, leading to an ineffective wash.

Always dry your car – never let it air dry. You can use a squeegee with a rubber blade to remove water while being gentle on your finish, or microfiber towels patted or moved back-and-forth across your car’s exterior.
Do your dirty work in the shade. If you wash your car out in the sun, it’ll dry as you work, creating water spots.

Car Washing Don’ts
Wash gently – don’t use a pressure washer on your vehicle! The high water pressure can worsen paint chips and scratches, damaging your car’s exterior.

Never use brushes with hard bristles, as they can damage the finish. If there are tough spots you can’t remove yourself, take your vehicle for a professional cleaning.

Never apply wax or polish on your vehicle directly, as it can streak your finish. To apply these products, first put them on a cloth, then use that cloth to apply them on the vehicle.

Do not wash or dry in circular motions, or you could leave visible swirls on your vehicle. Move with the car’s curves in straight motions.

Don’t neglect the undercarriage and door jambs, a favorite spot of dirt and grime. Regular washing in these areas can prevent damage and rust.

Don’t be in a hurry. Take the time to do the wash right and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Essentials for an emergency roadside kit

Many people who belong to AAA or drive a newer car feel as though they’ll be protected if a breakdown happens. In reality, when a breakdown happens, AAA may be far away or unreachable and you may be in a dark, desolate place with poor cell reception (or a dead cell phone). Each year, 1 in 3 motorists encounter a breakdown, dead car battery, or mechanical problems. Car emergency kits are important, even for newer cars, and even for those with roadside assistance – they can help you survive until help arrives.  There are a few essentials for a roadside emergency kit – they come prepackaged or you could assemble your own:

  1. Charged cell phone. Though you’ll probably carry this around, make sure your cell phone is charged when you get in the car and keep a car charger for long trips.
  2. First aid kit. Band-Aids, adhesive tape, gauze pads, and antiseptics can help with an injury.
  3. Fire Extinguisher.
  4. Reflective warning triangles. Warning triangles warn oncoming traffic that you are stopped on the road and can prevent another accident.
  5. Tire gauge. This can help with low or flat tires in driving tires and the spare. Many people go to change their tire and find that the spare is flat too.
  6. Foam tire sealant. This can help you repair a flat without having to change the tire.
  7. Jumper cables.
  8. Flashlight and extra batteries.
  9. Gloves and rags.
  10. Duct tape.
  11. Tow straps.
  12. Swiss army knife or other tools.
  13. Rain poncho.
  14. Drinking water and nonperishable snacks.
  15. When traveling in the snow and cold: a warm blanket, snow shovel, cat litter, and a windshield

Prepackaged roadside kits range from $18 to $70. And while preventative measures are never fun to spend money on, they can definitely come in handy in a tough situation. Most people don’t think about a roadside emergency kit until it’s too late.

Spring Has Sprung: Your Car Care Tips Checklist

Spring is almost here! Are you ready for warmer days, added sunshine, and to put away those winter coats and hats? Think about how great it’s going to feel to cruise down the road with your windows down, enjoying the warm breeze.

Before spring arrives, though, it’s important to remember that winter is a tough time of year for your car. Between frequent frost and cold temperatures, it can really put your car to the test. In order to make sure your luxury vehicle is ready to hit the road this spring, be sure to implement the following top-to-bottom tips:

Tip #1: Check Electrical Components

According to some estimates, the gruel of winter can reduce the performance of electrical components such as batteries, plugs, and wires up to 60 percent. If they’re not working properly, this means your car isn’t getting the spark it needs, which can lead to all kinds of problems.

Instead, check your vehicle’s electrical components and replace any that are visibly worn out, or that are three years old.

Tip #2: Kick Those Tires

Not really! Instead of kicking your tires, make sure they have plenty of tread left to keep you safe throughout the spring and summer. One easy way to accomplish this is by inserting a quarter into the grooves and checking to see if Washington’s head is partially covered. If it is, you’re probably good to go. Any less, though, and you’ll want to think about getting them replaced.

Don’t forget to check your tire pressure as well!

Tip #3: Belts & Hoses

Your car’s various belts and hoses are integral to its operation, so if something suddenly goes wrong, it can wreak havoc.

The good news is that you can visually inspect your hoses for leaks, squeeze them to see if they’ve softened, and look for cracks, peeling, or fraying on your belts.

Tip #4: Brakes & Suspension

Even if your car isn’t pulling to one side, or if your brakes aren’t squealing or grinding, you should still check them during spring since the frequent road moisture can give them a run for their money.

The same goes for your suspension: All the road moisture during the winter means potholes, which can easily throw your suspension and wheel alignment out of whack.

Tip #5: Fluid Levels

Honestly, this is something you (or the friendly staff at Dallas European Auto) should frequently be doing, but if you’ve forgotten, spring makes a good time to get back on track.

Check your car’s oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, windshield washer fluid, and coolant levels, along with how clean your air filter is and what kind of shape your windshield wipers are in. Your luxury vehicle might also require a brake fluid flush, which we’ll be happy to do for you.

Tip #6: Don’t Forget Your Air Conditioning

It might have been a while since you last turned on your air conditioning so this can be an easy one to overlook. But, the hot temperatures will soon return, so make sure everything is in working order by turning it on full blast and seeing how long it takes to cool down. If it takes too long, be sure to call the pros at Dallas European Auto!
